Plied Together: Mitchell Wool Co. and the Power of Makers

Updated: Oct 6

I first met the Mitchell Wool Co. team at Indie Untangled in 2023. It was one of those moments you don’t forget; walking into the pavilion, my eyes caught on this gorgeous, plumpy, sheepy yarn. Then I reached out to feel the samples, and I was instantly smitten. From that day on, I continued following their story on Instagram, cheering from afar. In 2024, I was fortunate to meet the team again, collaborate with them, and, through our time together, a wonderful friendship blossomed with everyone there.

I first wrote about Mitchell Wool Co when we launched some fun patterns last Fall 2024 here. This year, we’ve got even more projects coming, and I wanted to highlight something fabulous the Mitchell Wool team dreamed up earlier this year.

Sherry and her team are truly unique. They’ve cultivated a business that is so much more than “business.” It’s about relationships. It’s for the Flock. For the Farmily. Their mission is bold: to stop the decline of American wool production. Along the way, they’re building something beautiful: providing fair labor and equitable fleece pricing, supporting American processes, dyeing with nature, maintaining a regenerative family farm…the list goes on.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the Midwest, on 20 acres surrounded by family farms, that this work resonates so deeply. While my family never raised more than fruit trees and the occasional vegetable garden, the neighboring farms were fifth, sixth, even seventh generation. I carry so much pride for our farmers. They’re the ones working before the sun comes up and long after it sets. I remember many late-night drives home from the airport, passing barns lit at 2 a.m., neighbors tending animals, finishing feedings, or repairing equipment to be ready for the next day. If there’s a country song or two that says farmers are the hardest workers in America...I’d say that’s true most anywhere in the world.

So, back to the program I want to share. In 2025, Mitchell Wool Co. launched something extraordinary: The Makers Program. While traveling to their flagship and stockist yarn shops, they noticed that indie-dyed small-batch yarns weren’t always represented. Shop owners often shared that they simply didn’t have the time or bandwidth to manage small programs like these. Sherry and her team decided to change that by marrying their USA-raised, 100% wool (non-superwash, of course) with the talents of indie dyers, often female owned, across the country.

Each skein is artist-dyed using the dyer’s unique expertise and vision. The result? A collection that celebrates both the farm and the maker.

"Because we are stronger when plied together." Mitchell Wool Co.

The Pixel Party Cowl features the first Maker Collaboration with Lisa of Lili Loops. Lisa cranks up the color and drops the needle on hand-dyed yarn! Since 2019, she's been spinning vinyl vibes into vibrant skeins, inspired by her husbands DJ days in NYC and his legendary record collection. Every colorway is a fusion of old-school cool and fun, flirty, fresh energy...bold, bright and ready to groove. With a touch of disco ball sparkle, your stitches won't just shine, they'll dance!

As someone who believes deeply in the power of community and craft, I can’t help but cheer for programs like this. They remind us that yarn is never just yarn, it's people, stories, and shared creativity, plied together. I can’t wait to see what blooms from the Mitchell Wool Co + Makers Program for the future.
