This week we're exploring one of the most important and most overlooked characteristics of yarn. The twist.

Many knitters focus on fiber content, yarn weight, or color when choosing yarn. Those things certainly matter as we've already talked about some of them. But twist often has a tremendous influence on how a yarn behaves, wears, and knits.

WHAT IS TWIST?

Simply put, twist is exactly what it sounds like.

As fibers are spun into yarn, they're twisted together to create strength and structure.

The amount of twist can vary dramatically from one yarn to another. Some yarns are spun very tightly. Others are spun more loosely.

That difference affects far more than you might think.

WHY TWIST MATTERS

Twist influences:

• Durability

• Stitch definition

• Elasticity

• Pilling

• Fabric appearance

• Knitting experience

In many ways, twist helps determine how a yarn behaves once it becomes fabric.

HIGH-TWIST YARNS

High-twist yarns are often:

Because the fibers are held together more securely, stitches often appear crisp and well-defined. This is one reason many sock yarns feature a higher-twist construction. High-twist yarns can also make textured stitch patterns and cables stand out beautifully.

LOWER-TWIST YARNS

Lower-twist yarns are often:

✔ Soft

✔ Lofty

✔ Cozy

✔ Airy

These yarns create beautiful fabrics with a softer appearance and feel. However, because the fibers are less tightly secured, they may show wear more quickly depending on the project.

TWIST AND PILLING

One of the most common questions knitters ask is: "Why does this yarn pill?"

There are several factors involved, but twist plays an important role. Generally speaking, higher-twist yarns hold fibers more securely, which can reduce pilling. Lower-twist yarns may allow loose fibers to migrate to the fabric's surface more easily. Of course, fiber type and project use also matter.

TWIST AND STITCH DEFINITION

If you love cables, textured stitches, or intricate knit patterns, twist is worth paying attention to.

Higher-twist yarns often create sharper stitch definition because the stitches hold their shape more clearly. Lower-twist yarns can create a softer, more blended appearance.

When selecting yarn, think about how the finished project will be used.

For cozy shawls: Lower twist may create softness and drape.
